Bingo number nicknames and meanings

You would of well heard in your time around entertainment locations and so on the variety of bingo number nicknames that are used such as two fat ladies and legs eleven but have you ever wondered why these are the numbers nickname?

I have been asked about this on many occasions and decided to do some research on exactly what the meaning of these nicknames actually were. Below I have listed what I have found out about these nicknames in the hope that this will enlighten you to their meaning for future reference.

1- Kellys eye

This has the nickname kellys eye as it is related to military slang to do with Ned Kelly.

2. – One little duck or Me and you

The first of these names is that the number two has the resemblance of a duck and the second is of course a romantic rhyme.

3. – Cup of tea or You and me

The first name here is there is tea rhymes with three and the second is again a romantic rhyme.

4. – Knock at the door

This is due to the number matching four and door is expressed as people used to like a knock at the door.

5. – Man alive

Man alive sounds very similar to number five and also indicates you are still in the game.

6. – Tom mix or Half a dozen

Tom mix is of course after the famous actor who filmed many silent western films and half a dozen is of course six so this is why it has taken that nickname.

7. – Lucky for some

This nickname depicts that the number seven is considered extremely lucky in many cultures around the world.

8. – Garden gate

Another rhyme based nickname.
9. – Doctors orders

This is an intriguing one and historic as number nine was a type of pill that was distributed during the World War II by army doctors.

10. – (Maggies) den

This is a name that changes with ever prime minister of England as their first name will be used behind den to make the nickname. This is of course as the prime minister of England resides at number ten Downing Street.

11. – Legs eleven

This is by far the easiest to understand as the name depicts the shape of our legs to the number eleven.

12. – One dozen

This is in reference to their being twelve items in a traditional dozen.

13. – Unlucky for some

Thirteen has been universally known for centuries as the unluckiest number known to man.

14. – The lawnmower

This is a strange one but it is named this as when you look at an original lawnmower you would find it always had a fourteen inch blade.

16. – Sweet sixteen

This is used as sixteen has always been seen as the change from childhood to adulthood.

21. – Key of the door

This is associated with twenty one being the age most of adults reach maturity.

22. – Two little ducks

This again goes back to a duck looking like the number two but this time there are two of them.

23. – The lord is my Shepard

This is used as it is the first words that are quoted in the bible under reference Psalm 23.
24. – Knock at the door.

This again is the same reason as number four itself.

26. – Two and six or Half a penny.

This was the same equivalent of the currency that was around at the time the nickname being created.

27. – Duck and a crutch

This is a simple one as two is for a duck and the number seven seems to be shaped as a crutch.

28. – Two and eight or In a state.

This is solely due to the fact that these words rhyme with state.

30. – Birlington bertie or Dirty girty

The first of these is named after a musical song that was around during the early nineteen hundreds and the second is a slang rhyme from the name Gertrude.

32. – Buckle my shoe

Again solely down to the way the two words rhyme as well as the well knwn nursery rhyme.

33. – All the threes

This is down to the fact that each of the two numbers is a three.

35. – Jump and jive

This nickname is named after a famous dance step of the time and also the age when you are supposed to be at the prime of your life.

36. – Three dozen.

Thirty six adds up to three dozen hence this nickname being used.

44. – Droopy drawers.

This nickname comes about from a comedy rhyme from that period which describes a sagging pair of trousers.

52. – Danny la rue or Chicken vindaloo.

Danny la rue was a famous drag act of that period hence the name and is a name that has been put in as it resembles fifty two.

53. – Here comes herbie.

This nickname is down to the fact that the number printed on Herbies car is of course the number fifty three.

54. – House with the bamboo door.

Again a name that comes from the fact it rhymes with the number fifty four.

55. – All the fives.

This is the name as it is five and five to make fifty five.

57. – Heinz beanz

This is associated with the fifty seven varieties of the products from the company Heinz.

59. – Brighton line

Again another rhyme based association.

65. – Stop work.

This is associated with this number due to the fact it is the age of retirement for males in the United Kingdom at that time.

66. – Clickety click.

Another rhyme based association.

69. – Anyway up

This is as whatever you way you turn these two numbers together they look exactly the same.

71. – Bang on the drum

Another rhyme based association.

72. – Danny la rue

In association with the famous drag act of the time.

76. – Trombones or Was she worth it

The first is down to an extremely popular marching song of that period and the second is due to it being the cost of a marriage license in that era.

77. – Two little crutches.

This is down to the same reason as number seven as the number seven is shaped like a crutch but this time there are two.

80. – Gandhis breakfast.

This is supposed to be because if you took a birdseye view of Gandhi from above when he was sat crossing his legs you would see the number eighty.

87. – Torquay to devon.

Another rhyme based association as well as a popular travel route of the time.

88. – Two fat ladies.

This is solely down to the two number eights resembling two fat ladies when seated.

90. – Top of the shop

This gets the name top of the shop as it is the highest number available in the bingo shop.

Well these are the explanations I have found from why these interesting names have been associated with the numbers of the bingo card. As you can see some are just there as they simply rhyme with the number but many of them have an alternative meaning so I hope you now understand exactly what is being called and why during your bingo games.
